Pundit says Spurs player ‘looked frightened’ coming off the bench vs Leicester

Craig Burley has unleashed a tirade of criticism at Timo Werner, insisting that the Tottenham forward was too petrified to take on his full-back when he came on against Leicester City.

Spurs did not start the campaign in the fashion they would have wanted as they were held to a draw by newly-promoted Leicester on Monday.

The Lilywhites will be particularly disappointed with the result due to the way they dominated proceedings for much of the encounter, with a lack of cutting edge in the final third proving their undoing.

Ange Postecoglou made a string of changes in the latter stages of the game as Spurs threw the kitchen sink at the Foxes in search of a late winner, which proved elusive.

Werner accused of looking scared in Spurs cameo

Werner, who was one of the players who came on, replacing Brennan Johnson on the right, did not make much of an impact, with Burley accusing the German of playing like a ‘frightened schoolkid’.

The pundit told ESPN FC: “You say about making an impact off the bench, I’ll tell you another one for me, and I look at him as an international footballer of some repute who has been around the block. Is someone going to tell me what the hell Timo Werner does?

“He came into that game and he looked frightened stiff of the full-back. He never runs in behind, he never gets the cross in. I don’t give two stuffs what he did in Germany, he’s not at Leipzig.

“I’ve seen it before from him, whenever a ball is played up to him, if a defender is close to him he’s like a frightened schoolkid, he taps it off to the side, five yards, it’s a lack of responsibility.”

It would be unfair to put much blame on Werner when the likes of Son, Johnson and others also stunk up the place.

However, the former Chelsea man is simply not suited to playing on the right and evidently feels a lot more comfortable running at full-backs when he is on the left flank.
