5-year-old dead, 3 injured and a woman arrested after Logan Square fire: sources
A child has died and two others were hospitalized along with an adult woman after a fire in Logan Square on Friday, sources familiar with the situation told the Sun-Times.
A 5-year-old was found inside a building on fire in the 3600 block of West Palmer Street around 9:30 a.m. with wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died, sources told the Sun-Times. A 10-year-old and 14-year-old — who were related to the child who died — were also hospitalized, and their conditions weren’t yet known. All three children were stabbed, according to sources.
A woman, believed to be the mother of the three children, was arrested at the scene and taken to Community First Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation, sources told the Sun-Times.
The fire spread to an adjacent building and a woman inside was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, sources said.
The first building, which was brick, was largely undamaged though the adjacent building suffered a roof collapse.
Chicago police didn't immediately have information to share on the incident or reported arrest.
Officers went in and out of the house as evidence cameras flashed through broken windows of the home Friday afternoon.
Living just a few houses down, Kevin Garcia’s family had to evacuate along with their pets. He hadn’t been home at the time but heard from family that their attic had some water damage.
Garcia, who has lived on the block for 20 years, has seen the children help their mom bring groceries in from the car.
“They were literally so little,” Garcia, 22, said of the kids.
He said he was on a video call with his mom when officers brought the kids into the street to try to resuscitate them before they were taken away in ambulances, and described them as having grievous injuries.
“It’s so sad,” Garcia said. “What a tragedy.”
