UEFA Super Cup and the start of the season; are we prepared?

UEFA Super Cup and the start of the season; are we prepared?

The last time I wrote an article was back in May, just after we had won the Europa League Cup and that article was entitled “We’ve won the Europa Trophy, so thank you and goodbye, Ange.” That was before Ange was given his P45 and Thomas Frank was brought in as his replacement.

Between now and then, it has been a topsy-turvy world where I’ve been here, there, and everywhere… dealing with death, problems and life in general… that is why no articles have been forthcoming… hopefully I am back on course to put my life back in order, along with the help of Janette!

Anyway, while all this has been happening, Daniel Levy was reorganising the Board, and there was talk of millions being thrown at the transfer market… others and I thought, Levy has come to his senses, winning the Europa League Cup made him reevaluate his priorities. Since then, he has given an interview in which he said that his greatest achievement was the stadium. Wrong! His greatest achievement should be the footballing side, not his money-making auditorium.

In 1882, a group of cricket lovers decided to create a football team for the winter months… Since then, under successive owners and managers, we won many trophies… that is, until Levy and ENIC hijacked our stadium… not for footballing purposes, but to build a money empire that enriches the greedy, not football… Under Levy, we managed to win two lower-tier trophies… the first was 2008 (League Cup) and the second was 17 years later… the Europa League Cup. Beyond that, has anything changed? All managers who have got us to important finals were quickly dismissed… even if they had won a trophy. What has been constant is the head-in-the-sand attitude by the board over investing in the team.

Last season was our worst ever season in the Premier League, finishing 17th.

Ange went, and Thomas the Frank Engine was put in place. Kudus was bought in from West Ham, and a few on-loan players were made permanent. Oh, and Maddison is out for a season. We are sleepwalking into another poor season, unless the hierarchy pulls its finger out and invests heavily in the team; then nothing will change. Over the years, we’ve tried different managers, experienced mid-table managers, young kids (Mason), and the inexperienced from nowhere. We’ve tried different styles of football, even down under football (which did win us a trophy), but also a relegation-threatened season. So maybe we should point the finger at the overlord who does the hiring and tell him to go back to the stars… in particular, Uranus…

The Super Cup is this Wednesday (I got my ticket) against PSG… a thrashing or a surprise result? Chelsea had the surprise over them and won… I think we will come off against the French team with egg on our faces. I hope I am wrong… but nothing at the moment says otherwise. We got a good thrashing by Kane’s team, and more, I feel, is on the way, sadly for us this season.

But like all fans, I’ve got to be optimistic and hope that we can create something special and might… just… pull off a superb win…

I am hoping that we will purchase more players for the relevant positions over the next few days and weeks. But I am doubtful, Levy being Levy.

A super football computer has put us ending the season in 7th position… We’d be so lucky! Staving off relegation would be more like it.

So far, I’ve seen Spurs against Reading and Luton, and I wasn’t impressed. Granted, they were friendlies to try out different formations and players, but it hasn’t left me with any confidence. The Arsenal game was a victory with a brilliant Sarr goal… but it was just a friendly!

Anyway, I am off shortly to Italy to see what our new guy can do against somebody like PSG. Pull of a miracle or same old, same old under Uncle Levy.

This coming Saturday, I am off to Levy’s money investment machine, they call the Tottenham Stadium… with a proud Cock overlooking his happiness; after all he is the highest paid director/ owner in the Premier league… no doubt he shall use some of his money to erect a statue to himself… like they did in Rome, back in the Roman Empire days. Hail Ceaser! Hail Levy! For what? A great stadium.

Talking about trophies, omens and nostalgia…  fifty-six years ago – on the day we meet PSG in a final – we met Burnley: We dismantled our opponents at White Hart Lane (the stadium where we won so many trophies and made history). Goals from Collins, Pearce, Greaves, and Chivers were the men who made the difference on the day. Will we be so ruthless against PSG… will history repeat itself? Well, we don’t have the quality we had then. Actually, we don’t have anything we had then, other than a money-making stadium. No doubt Levy will be looking at it that way… When I write this, I think of that ABBA song, sung by Daniel…

Money, money, money

Must be funny

In my world

Money, money, money

Always sunny

In my world.

Yes, your greatest achievement… sadly, not the achievement we fans hoped for!

Your thoughts….

All the best, Glenn
