Italy is lovely
Italians are friendly, welcoming and generous

But Rome is an overpriced shithole full of shitty people and below standard food, served in restaurants that are all on the make where "waiters" try to drag you in off the streets.

If you go anywhere else in Italy you'll find that even Italians hate Rome (in much the same way that French people outside of Paris hate Paris)

Vatican ? Oh yeah, great if you want to fill your suitcase with cheap plastic tat and nodding Popes before being rushed through with barely a chance to take anything in.

Taking two kids with you will be stressful, you'll get bored of telling scammers to piss off and then piss off again. You'll get hassled and bothered and you'll find it massively tiresome... and if you want to complain about absolutely anything then you'll get a shrug and "not my problem".

If you and the wife really want to go to Rome then wait until the 5 year old is 18 and can stay at home alone .. the ruins will still be there, i promise

Naples is lovely .. go there instead if you have to go to Italy ... leave Rome to the American tourists - they deserve each other
