I think that's always been the case. There was some mythical point when the atmosphere was always good.
It certainly wasn't in the 80's when we had a 50-90% empty ground and lost most weeks. The terracing produced a more intense crowd at times, but mostly it was fractious and grumpy and there was a pronounced uncurrent of trouble.
The first couple of seasons in the Premier League were pretty good & I'd say the last 10 games of last season (Vertu final aside) were pretty good.
Mostly though 90 minutes is a long time to remain permanently enthusiastic. There are long flat periods in most games at most grounds.
