NFL Today: Chiefs and Ravens Renew Rivalry
Trent Williams‘ holdout is over thanks to a new deal with the 49ers, leaving Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick as the league’s last holdout; and Head Coach Brian Daboll will take over playcalling duties for the New York Giants this season.
Is KC Rookie WR Fantasy Worthy?
On Thursday, the NFL regular season kicks off with a bang as Baltimore hosts the Kansas City Chiefs for a rematch of last year’s AFC title game.
Among the more interesting Fantasy angles for this game is that it will be the NFL debut of KC wide receiver Xavier Worthy, the 28th overall pick in this year’s draft. He has already opened eyes in the organization during training camp and looks ready to hit the ground running as a rookie.
Expect Worthy to chalk up at least 45 yards in his first game, making him a mid-range WR3/high-end WR4 for the week. He’s not a future star, but should be an average starter at the very least, thanks to elite athleticism that saw him run a 4.21 40-yard dash to set a record at the Combine. That speed should make Worthy a deep ball threat right from the outset, so we’re curious to see how the Chiefs try to take advantage of this weapon.
If things don’t work out for Worthy in football, there’s always basketball, but at the very least, he already has his TD celebration down pat — at least in the virtual world…
Where Does Courtland Sutton Rank?
Still looking at wide receivers, Denver Broncos veteran Courtland Sutton may not be up to his usual standards now that he’s getting fed the pigskin from rookie Bo Nix.
For those of you considering season parlays, Sutton has topped 700 yards receiving in each of his full seasons (remember, he only played one game in 2020 before tearing an ACL), so really, it’s no surprise that he’s at -125 to put up 750 or more yards as per FanDuel.
If that’s going to happen, he’ll need to be targeted more often; and for his Fantasy value to remain strong, he’ll need to duplicate or at least come close to the career high 10 TDs he had last year, and that seems like a bigger stretch. Realistically, a maximum of six touchdowns seems far likelier given the situation, so draft accordingly.
Heading into the 2020 season, we slotted Sutton in the top 60 in our Top 150 Fantasy football rankings, but for 2024, he’s barely a top 100 player.
For Week One (in Seattle), we think Sutton compares very favourably to Worthy; in fact, with Sutton probably being a solid WR4 for the week, it’s almost a coin toss with both receivers likely getting seven to eight Fantasy points.
RotoRob Tune of the Day
Jamaican reggae gods the Maytals got their start in 1962, and notwithstanding a couple of breaks, are still at it today. For more of their career, they were known as Toots and Maytals, and their 1972 track “It Must Be True Love” was featured on the 1999 reggae compilation Trojan Lovers Collection.
