Sam Altman says article about OpenAI’s next model as ‘fake news’

0

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has hit back against a news report that suggests the company’s next flagship model would be launched by December.

It was on Friday (October 25) when The Verge published a report titled ‘OpenAI plans to release its next big AI model by December.’

In the article, the journalists write that they have learned the startup’s new model, codenamed Orion, is slated to arrive around the two-year anniversary of ChatGPT.

The generative AI chatbot was launched on 30 November 2022, making its two-year anniversary just a few weeks away.

The published piece also states the next model wouldn’t initially be released widely through ChatGPT as instead, OpenAI “is planning to grant access first to companies it works closely with in order for them to build their own products and features, according to a source familiar with the plan.”

The article says another source told them that engineers inside Microsoft are preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November. Within the report, they write that OpenAI and Microsoft declined to comment on this story.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman heads to X to dismiss article about next model

Just a short while later, and after one of the reporters shared the article through X (formerly Twitter), Sam Altman joined in the discussion.

He replied simply with “fake news out of control.” An X user then replied with ‘Bruh you just ruined all of our nights,’ to which Altman said: “dw plenty of great stuff coming your way, just offends me how media is willing to print random fantasy.”

The technology CEO spent a short amount of time replying to fans of OpenAI’s creations on X, but he didn’t go into details about all the rumors in the report.

Just days before taking to X to dismiss an article, on October 21, Altman highlighted the upcoming anniversary of the chatbot product with a tweet saying: “whoa ChatGPT’s 2nd birthday is next month!”

He followed that up by writing: “what should we give it for a birthday present…”
