Hearts of Iron IV gets long-awaited alternate history expansion which examines what happens when Germany wins the war

0

Paradox’s hardcore World War II strategy game Hearts of Iron IV has been around since 2016 but is still the main go-to for the conflict when it comes to grand strategy titles. Despite a seemingly steep learning curve, a few YouTube tutorials later and you can find yourself orchestrating the battle like one of the great leaders of the time.

Of course, taking on the role of the Germans gives you the opportunity to change history, but in this new Hearts of Iron IV Expansion pass that has just launched, you get to play with an alternate Axis, complete with super weapons, and a game trailer that shows the destruction of the USA as the Germans reach nuclear capability before Oppenheimer and his mates.

If you have ever watched the Amazon series The Man in the High Castle the premise here is the same. The Germans and Japanese are the strongest and if they are not stopped, well they will win the war and control the world, just like in the series.

The Expansion Pass is available now, and you will get a few bonus unlocks for jumping in immediately but the date everybody is interested in is 14th November when the Götterdämmerung expansion goes live. This update adds significant new content to Germany, with new alternate histories in a greatly expanded Focus Tree. It also adds new ways to research and deploy Special Projects (such as nuclear research, advanced weapons, and rocketry), as well as enabling raids on key enemy targets.

The devs said in a post on Steam, “A German-themed expansion is something many of you have been clamoring for many years, and as we’ve been quite clear about in previous roadmaps, we’ve also wanted to work on a super-weapons feature since the release of HoI4. Naturally, these two things made sense to tackle together.

“Germany will be receiving a totally revised historical national focus tree and a host of new alternate historical paths. We’ll go into further detail about exactly what is coming here, but we’ve put a high premium on retaining the core feeling that Germany’s old tree gave the player: a sense that they are the protagonist in the events leading up to the war; that the conflict revolves around their actions.”

If you have been out of HOI4 for a while, or are yet to give it a go, now seems like a good time to jump in. Expansion Pass 1 costs £31.19/$34.99 and is available to purchase on Steam now with the expansion itself arriving in November.
