YouTube integrates Google DeepMind AI for Shorts and releases a host of new features

Video-sharing platform YouTube is honing in on the use of artificial intelligence, with new AI tools announced on Wednesday (Sep. 18) at the Made on YouTube event.

In a news blog, Johanna Voolich, the chief product officer, said they are now “bringing the transformative power of AI” to creators and communities.

In what has been dubbed ‘a new creative partner,’ the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio has now had a generative AI makeover. Going forward, the tool will be powered by AI and will help curate suggestions for video makers. It can assist with general ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines.

“We believe AI will unlock new forms of expression for creators, and that it should put its power to work for you and your creative vision,” Voolich wrote.

Next year, the platform will be launching a new shortcut that takes users straight to the Inspiration Tab from “anywhere you find inspiration, like your top comments, other videos, or even your own catalog.”

Google’s DeepMind integrated into YouTube platform

This is the platform’s biggest push towards AI they’ve released yet, with more changes occurring. For those who create Shorts, the platform will now tap into Google’s DeepMind video-generation model.

This will allow users to utilize Veo to add AI-generated backgrounds to their videos, as well as the ability to create stand-alone six-second video clips. The integration will begin later this year.

According to CNBC, YouTube CEO Neal Nohan said he hopes Veo will enable creators to produce more Shorts videos with the help of AI.

“Everything that we showed with AI was meant to really enhance the work that you do, make it faster, more efficient, to bring your creative ideas to life faster,” Mohan was reported as saying at the Made on YouTube event in New York.

The creations using the AI tool will be watermarked using SynthID and will have a label applied to tell viewers it’s generated with AI.

An automatic dubbing tool has also been tested which enables users to generate translated audio tracks for their videos in different languages. While this was initially tested with a small group, the product officer says they’ll bring it to “hundreds of thousands more in the coming months.”

The languages supported will be expanded upon too, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and more.

People’s voices could soon get the AI treatment too as the team is “piloting a new capability with a handful of creators, that will transfer your tone and intonation, the ambiance of your surroundings – and infuse it into the dubbed audio, making the experience sound even more natural.”

It’s not just new features being introduced but changes to YouTube staples too. AI-enhanced reply suggestions tailored to individual styles will be brought in for the comments section, so creators can reply to fans in a more time-saving way.
