Habs cut 25 players from training camp
With the Habs going into Saturday’s game with 59 players on their training camp roster, cuts were bound to happen at some point. That has now happened with Montreal trimming that roster by 25 players.
Forward Vinzenz Rohrer has been assigned to Zurich in Switzerland. He’s under contract with them for this season and like Oliver Kapanen a year ago, he’s ineligible to play for Laval until Zurich’s season comes to an end.
Meanwhile, the following 24 players were sent to Laval with their preseason set to start this week:
Goalies (4): Jacob Fowler, Benjamin Gaudreau, Hunter Jones, Kevin Mandolese
Defence: (6): Joshua Jacobs, Darick Louis-Jean, Charles Martin, Ryan O’Rourke, Tobie Paquette-Bisson, Wyatte Wylie
Forwards: (14): Vincent Arseneau, Laurent Dauphin, Jared Davidson, Will Dineen, Joe Dunlap, Mark Estapa, Egor Guriunov, Riley Kidney, Filip Mesar, Israel Mianscum, Joshua Roy, Xavier Simoneau, Tyler Thorpe, Luke Tuch
Of the cuts, none are waiver-eligible although some of those moves could be coming as soon as later on Sunday once the waiver period opens up at 2:00 PM ET.
There aren’t any major shockers in this group but the fact that Roy is in here is a sign of how far down the depth chart he has fallen. Considering he was expected to make the team this time last year, it’s fair to say that he has some work to do to get back on the radar.
Montreal now has 34 players left in camp – 19 forwards, 12 defencemen, and 3 goalies. For the blueliners, David Reinbacher and William Trudeau are expected to open the year on season-opening injured reserve so the number of cuts needed there is a little lower than it might seem at first glance.
