On Aug. 8, Scott Ellis, golf course superintendent at Wellshire Golf Course in Denver, Colo., recorded the 100 millionth POGO sample.

Wellshire is a Donald Ross designed public course approaching its 100th anniversary. As one of the few public-access Ross courses in the U.S. and the only one west of the Mississippi, it carries a rich legacy while serving a high-volume, modern golf audience. On a busy public course like Wellshire, water stewardship and playability go hand in hand. With POGO’s data guiding daily decisions, Ellis can optimize irrigation, eliminate unnecessary watering, reduce wilting risk and keep greens performing under heavy play, according to the company.

POGO’s journey began with its very first recorded sample on April 4, 2015, at Sherbrooke Golf and Country Club in Florida. Since then, millions of samples from turf professionals worldwide have built a powerful foundation for smarter, more sustainable turf care, helping teams like Ellis’ turn data into decisions every day.

Ellis stated he has relied on POGO since 2021 to gain deeper, actionable insights across his property. Beyond moisture measurements, he uses POGO’s data sampling and GPS integration to map the entire course including pins, irrigation infrastructure, utilities, hydrants and more. He says the clarity POGO offers has streamlined communication, improved consistency and helped ensure nothing is missed.

Chad Yotter

Superintendent

Mayfield CC, Cleveland, Ohio

After 18 holes, what can I get you?

It’s getting to be that time of the year … I’m a sucker for an Oktoberfest. Sam Adams is my favorite.

Tell me about Mayfield.

It’s your classical golf course — rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways and push-up greens. The land gives it a lot of character.

How long have you been there, and how did you get into the industry?

I just passed 20 years. I started as an assistant in 2005 and became superintendent in December of 2017. I’m originally from northern Indiana, near Fort Wayne. I got my start at Chestnut Hills at age 15 picking range balls. I wanted more hours, and they pointed me toward the grounds crew. And now, here I am today. I got my turfgrass degree from Purdue University, took an internship in Cleveland, and I’ve been here ever since.

Have you been there long enough to adopt the Cleveland teams?

Yes, mostly the Guardians — I still call them the Indians. Baseball is my No. 1 sport, and I still root for Purdue, especially in basketball — they’re going to be pretty good this year.

Do you have a most memorable day at work?

The Fourth of July celebration at the club is always memorable. It makes me happy to see everyone enjoying the golf course. At that point in the season, the course is in really good shape, and I am able to appreciate all of the hard work of our grounds staff.

Next time I’m out in your area, what do you suggest I do?

There are a lot of great classical golf courses over here on the east side of Cleveland — Pepper Pike, Canterbury, the Country Club, Shaker, Kirtland. After seeing some golf courses, you’ve got to go downtown. We have so many great restaurants. One of my favorites is Masthead Brewing Co. It’s super simple, just really good pizza and beer.

Do you have a family, and what do you do for fun?

We don’t have any kids, but my wife, Holly, and I have a dog, Paris — she’s also our course dog — and a cat, Boiler. They’re our kids. And for fun, we go to national parks. Over the last 18 years that we’ve been married, we’ve been to 25 of the 63 national parks.

What’s your all-time golf highlight?

I just crossed one off my bucket list: I went to the Masters this year. It’s a tough time of year to get down there for us northern superintendents. We’re all aerifying and opening up the course for the season. A few guys told me: You’ve got to get down there. It was pretty surreal being there as I grew up watching the Masters with my family.

Troon, a provider of golf and club-related leisure and hospitality services, was selected to manage Hunting Hills Country Club, a private club in Roanoke, Va. Troon will oversee club operations, agronomy, food and beverage and membership sales and marketing.

Located in the picturesque foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hunting Hills is a member-owned club with an array of amenities including an 18-hole championship golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, pickleball courts, a swimming pool and splash pad, a fitness center and a kids’ club. The club has a very active junior golf program, swim teams, as well as themed summer camps and junior sports camps.

“Hunting Hills is on an amazing trajectory over the last five years, and we have been able to invest in several programs and capital projects that have really improved the member experience,” said Hunting Hills Country Club president Stanley Hays. “Our recent upgrades include a fitness center remodel, locker room remodel, new pickleball courts, LED lighting in our indoor tennis facility and a brand-new pool and splash pad.  Additionally, our golf course and dining options have been top-notch and very consistent.  We ultimately decided that a partnership with Troon was the best path for us to capitalize on the strengths of Hunting Hills and ensure we become the best country club in the Roanoke Valley.”

Established in 1971, Hunting Hills Country Club’s golf course was designed by Raymond F. Loving, Jr., and presents an engaging challenge for golfers of all skill levels, according to the club. The 6,058-yard, par 70 course meanders up and over hills with tree-lined fairways and perched greens.

“We are excited to partner with Hunting Hills Country Club,” said Troon vice president of operations Justin Smith. “Hunting Hills has a storied history, and we are honored to be part of the next chapter. We can’t wait to welcome all current and future members to the club.”
