Alain Delon: a 'god' in Japan

France24.com (en)

"In Japan I am a kind of a god," Delon told Figaro Magazine in 1986 on one of his many visits to Japan, when women fainted and crowds chased his limousine. "People get real pleasure from touching me, caressing my hand, kissing my fingers," he told the magazine, reporting on fans showering him with gifts from red roses to statuettes. Delon's breakthrough role in Japan was "Purple Noon" (1960) as the handsome, homicidal anti-hero for the original screen version of Patricia Highsmith's thriller "The Talented Mr Ripley". France24.com (en)

Child malnutrition is soaring in Yemen's government-controlled areas, UNICEF said on Sunday, citing the latest report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative. The UN children's agency said the increased rates were "driven by the compounded effect of disease outbreaks (cholera and measles), high food insecurity, limited access to safe drinking water, and economic decline".

Apes to stay at home as Malaysia tweaks 'orangutan diplomacy'

France24.com (en)

In a scheme modelled on China's "panda diplomacy", Malaysia announced in May that it would send the great apes as gifts to palm oil-purchasing countries, sparking an outcry among conservationists. Orangutans are critically endangered, according to the WWF, with habitat loss due to logging and agricultural expansion -- particularly palm oil plantations. On Sunday, Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said any gifted orangutans will stay in Malaysia, the official Bernama news agency reported. Читать дальше...

France bids farewell to screen legend Alain Delon

France24.com (en)

No national tribute has been planned, as Delon had made it clear he did not want one. He said he wanted to be buried near his dogs on his property in Douchy in central France where he died. He had already started sounding out the local authorities there, Christophe Hurault, the sub-prefect of Loiret, told AFP. The prefecture "had given its agreement in principle". His three children, Anthony, Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, having squabbled bitterly for months over his medical treatment, spoke in a... Читать дальше...

Government cronies co-opt beloved Hungary lakeside, locals warn

France24.com (en)

Luxury hotels, apartment blocks and closed-off marinas have begun in recent years to replace the free-entry beaches, campsites and greenery around central Europe's largest freshwater lake -- affectionately known as the "Hungarian Sea". Some locals warn the trend threatens traditional tourism and blame the changes on Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Critics accuse the nationalist leader of letting his allies take over large swathes of the economy since his 2010 return to power. "I'm seriously worried," said Peter Karpati... Читать дальше...

"This is a decisive moment -- probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security," Blinken said as he met Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The US secretary of state was due to meet later on Monday with Israeli... Читать дальше...

Investors appear to have got over the turmoil that beset trading floors earlier in the month as a string of data suggested that worries of a US recession had been overdone. Powell's talk at the annual Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming -- which also gathers together financial leaders and policymakers -- will be pored over, with hopes that he will flag an interest rate cut when Fed officials meet next month. "Investors and analysts alike will be paying close attention to any signals from Fed officials... Читать дальше...

Sinner edges past Zverev to meet Tiafoe in Cincinnati final

France24.com (en)

The world number one had lost four of five previous matches against the German, with his only win coming at Roland Garros four years ago. The tight victory took more than three hours not including a rain interruption. The match was paused midway through the first-set tiebreaker for nearly 30 minutes while a shower passed over the area -- another episode of the poor weather which has plagued the event in recent days. Sinner saved two Zverev set points and won the opener on his own third chance... Читать дальше...

The hurricane, whose center is forecast to pass near southeastern Newfoundland, Canada late Monday into Tuesday, was creating dangerous conditions for residents and vacationers along the North American Atlantic seaboard, the US National Hurricane Center said.
