Faustino Oro close to a first GM norm

Faustino Oro (born October 14, 2013 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine chess player and one of world’s top prodigies. With a rating of 2464 elo in the September rating list, he has just entered the Top 100 juniors

Faustino Oro holds the title of International Master (awarded in June 2024 at age 10 years, 8 months, and 16 days), making him the youngest player in history to both achieve that title and reach a FIDE rating of 2400. His first IM norm he achieved ITT Copa Ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia, where he also earned the bronze medal. The second norm of Faustino Oro is at Jorge Vega In Memoriam 2024, while the third is at Barcelona Julio 2024 A closed tournament.

Currently based in Spain, Faustino continues competing in international tournaments representing Argentina, and has been dubbed to be “the Messi of chess”. The Argentine prodigy is currently participating at Legends vs Prodigies, where he is with a perfect start 4,5/5, bringing him one step closer to his first GM norm.

The current World Champion Gukesh is the youngest to have achieved a GM norm. He made this at just 11 years and 10 months old, at the 2018 Bangkok Open. If Faustino Oro wins his first GM norm at Legends vs Prodigies, he will be the second youngest ever to achieve it, at 11 years 11 months.

Faustino Oro and records go hand in hand. At age nine, Oro became the youngest player to achieve a 2300 classical FIDE rating (a record broken by Ethan Pang). Oro was also the youngest IM norm achiever (now The youngest IM norm achiever is Roman Shogdzhiev)

Next for Faustino Oro: the World Cup

The FIDE World Chess Cup 2025 is going to take place October 30 – November 27 in India. It will feature 208 players in 8 knockout rounds of classical games. The FIDE World Cup 2025 will award three spots to the Candidates 2026. There Faustino Oro is a wild card, together with Andy Woodward, Abhi Mishra, Volodar Murzin, and Kirill Alekseenko.
