Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus enters the world’s top 100 at 14
At the age of 14, Turkish chess grandmaster Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş has achieved a remarkable milestone by entering the top 100 of the world’s elite chess players. In the first game of the Clash of Generations match, Erdoğmuş, playing with the black pieces, secured a decisive victory against Grandmaster Peter Svidler. This triumph added 6.0 Elo points to his rating, elevating his FIDE rating to 2632.0 and positioning him at the virtual 98th rank globally. Additionally, Erdoğmuş continues to excel on the junior rating list, where he would now hold the 7th position, closely trailing his compatriot Ediz Gürel.

Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş is a Turkish chess grandmaster and prodigy, born on June 3, 2011, in Bursa, Turkey. He is recognized as one of the youngest grandmasters in chess history, achieving the title on April 1, 2024, at the age of 12 years, 9 months, and 29 days, making him the fourth-youngest grandmaster ever. He also became the youngest player to reach a FIDE rating of 2600, surpassing a record previously set by Judit Polgár, with a rating of 2601 at the 45th Chess Olympiad in September 2024.
Erdoğmuş began playing chess at age six, introduced to the game by his kindergarten teacher. His early achievements include winning the U-8 European Chess Championship in 2019 with a perfect 8/8 score and the 2018 Cesme International Open Chess Tournament in the age 8 category. In 2022, he became Turkey’s youngest International Master (IM) at age 11, earning the title after gaining the necessary norms and a 2400 Elo rating.
His path to the grandmaster title included earning his first GM norm at the Chessable Sunway Sitges Chess Festival in December 2023, his second at the Jeddah Young Masters in January 2024, and his third at the Grenke Open Chess Tournament in April 2024. At the Sharjah Masters 2024, he reached a live rating of 2569, breaking Polgár’s 34-year-old record for the highest Elo rating before age 13.
