More about the O2C Doeberl Chess Cup
The Doeberl Cup is Australia’s premier Grand Prix chess tournament and the country’s longest-running weekend chess event, held annually in Canberra since 1963, except for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Named after its primary sponsor, Austrian-born chess enthusiast and building contractor Erich Doeberl, who immigrated to Australia in 1955, the tournament has grown significantly in size and prestige, often attracting more players than the Australian Chess Championships. It is held over the Easter weekend and is known for its competitive fields and strong international participation.
The tournament began in 1963 after Erich Doeberl’s friend Toni Wiedenhofer proposed a weekend event to draw strong interstate players. Doeberl donated £100 for the prize fund, and the inaugural seven-round tournament at the Australian National University saw 29 players compete, with John Purdy winning a perfect 7/7. By 1970, it was established as Australia’s leading weekend tournament, with steady growth in entries over the decades
