Aston Villa executive says club needs to adapt to financial limitations of PSR: ‘I know what I think’
New Aston Villa executive Roberto Olabe has given his first interview with the club’s official media channels and addressed the challenges ahead.
Villa brought in former Real Sociedad recruitment chief Olabe to succeed Monchi last month. He will serve as the club’s president of football operations, working with manager Unai Emery and director of football operations Damian Vidagany as Villa’s football department.
I know my profile, I know what I think about identifying talent, I know what I think about developing talent, I know what I think about the promotional talent, I know what I think about the pathway and the long term, the strategy, the structure, the organisation, the game model, the methodology, the scouting programme,” Olabe told VillaTV.
“I know, but still, I think that I need time to share with the people, to know, and at the moment, just in case, to propose what I think to develop here in Aston Villa.”
Just like Monchi before him, Olabe has been tasked with developing Villa’s squad through evolution and player trading, challenges that need to be achieved while remaining compliant with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations.
‘We need to adapt’
“It’s true that there are some rules around the social environment, around the football environment, and we want to respect these kinds of rules,” Olabe continued.
“Maybe we can agree, maybe we can disagree, but definitely, we need to respect, and from this, we need to adapt the way that we have to be in the market.
“But it’s important also, because the prestige of the club, it’s important to the people, so know that we are part of this actual environment, regarding, I mean, rules, and regarding, we will respect, but we work so hard to try to make balance between our needs and our possibilities.”
The financial framework in which Villa must operate is another layer to the game and will lead to some unwanted sales and exciting signings in the next couple of transfer windows.
‘You need to have this support’
Olabe was asked how he expects to interact with Francesco Calvo, his commercial equivalent as Villa’s new president of business operations.
“Sometimes we need to be in contact, we need to have this same objective, because finally what happens is inside the field, okay, but what happens inside the field, you need to have this support regarding structure and an organisation, and structure in the organisation will be commercial areas, will be communication areas, will be academy, will be women,” he said.
“This is the way that I have to view one project, how we integrate. It’s not just speak one important thing. Important thing is every single day, how we are working around the club.”
Villa’s current squad will be back in action in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon when they welcome AFC Bournemouth to Villa Park.
