‘It’s hard to get your head around’: manager explains injury heartbreak for Aston Villa loan star

Zépiqueno Redmond has been ruled out for several months after sustaining a serious knee injury while playing for Huddersfield Town on loan from Aston Villa.

Villa signed Redmond from Feyenoord, their next Europa League opponents, as their first addition of the summer transfer window.

The Rotterdam-born 19-year-old had very little senior first team experience under his belt and a deadline day deal was done to link him up with fellow Villa youngster Josh Feeney at Huddersfield.

League One promotion hopefuls Huddersfield were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at home against Manchester City last week and Redmond went down injured after an hour at Accu Stadium.

He was subsequently unable to take part in Saturday’s win at Exeter City and it has now been confirmed that Redmond will be out of action for an extended period.

Huddersfield and Villa are in discussions about the nature and location of his treatment and recuperation but no decision has yet been made.

‘Conversations are still ongoing’

Terriers manager Lee Grant spoke to the press ahead of the short trip to Harrogate Town for an EFL Trophy fixture on Tuesday evening and explained the state of play regarding both Redmond and Will Alves, who is on loan from Leicester City and has also been struck down by injury early in the season.

“Due to just how recent Zeppi [Redmond]’s injury has been, conversations [with Aston Villa] are still ongoing with regards to how that will look and play out for Zeppi,” Grant said in his Monday press conference.

“They’re both great kids, and we’ve enjoyed we’ve enjoyed working with them and having them and the exposure to the opportunity to develop them both. So having both or either of them around will be a bonus for us, just because of their personalities. But yeah, of course, we need to be respectful of what their parent clubs wishes are as well.”

Speaking specifically about Redmond’s injury against City, Grant revealed that it was an example of desperately bad luck for a young player in a new league and a new country.

“I think you look at Zeppi, and as I said at the weekend, it’s a mechanism that he’ll do a thousand more times in his career.

“He’s running, he’s dribbling the football, and he’s passing to his teammate, and he’s doing so without any contact from the opposition. And as a result of that mechanism, we lose him for four months, possibly. So again, it’s hard to get your head round. Tough one to take.”

Last week’s Carabao Cup third round tie was Redmond’s first start in English football after two appearances from the bench in League One.

He made his debut with Huddersfield 3-0 down at Bradford City three weeks ago, scoring a consolation goal with his first touch.
