Aston Villa player ratings range from 3 to 7 after Europa League win against Bologna

0

Aston Villa fans have given their verdicts on the players’ individual performances in a 1-0 win over Bologna in the Europa League.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Villa v Bologna player ratings

Marco Bizot – 7.3 – MOTM (shared)

The role of second-choice goalkeeper can be a thankless one but Villa have acquired as good a back-up as anyone could hope to have. And not before time!

Matty Cash – 6.7

It was another solid display from Villa’s maligned right-back, who seems more than capable of playing well without being unduly affected by over-the-top outside criticism.

Ezri Konsa – 7.0

I thought Konsa was comfortable enough and didn’t have a great deal to do beyond staying composed in possession and dealing with the scraps of attacking threat Bologna threw at him. Led a near-perfect defensive line.

Pau Torres – 7.0

Torres put in his best performance for a while, reading the play nicely and moving the ball on quickly enough to show off his passing ability.

Ian Maatsen – 6.3

Maatsen linked well with Emi Buendía and Donyell Malen to give Villa an attacking foothold in the left channel. He wasn’t put under a huge amount of pressure but Federico Bernardeschi cut inside a few times and would have been a threat if he could shoot.

Boubacar Kamara – 7.3 – MOTM (shared)

Kamara is the business. You know it. I know it. He’s had better individual matches than this but when he’s on the pitch doing his thing, he shows why Villa miss him when he’s not.

John McGinn – 6.6

Unai Emery was thrilled with McGinn after the Bologna match and fair enough. He won the match with a brilliantly taken goal and was a bloody nuisance throughout.

Evann Guessand – 5.7

Every time I think Guessand has divided opinion on social media and has shown a few signs of what he can do without really catching fire, your average rating for him matches mine quite closely. I remain hopeful.

Morgan Rogers – 3.0

Yeah. This was another tough one for Rogers.

Emi Buendía – 5.1

I’d love Buendía to have a more direct attacking impact in terms of goals and assists, and I don’t think he should be starting ahead of certain other options, but I’m enjoying watching him building a Villa career out of dirt and dust.

Donyell Malen – 5.6

It wasn’t Malen’s best Villa performance but it was his best Villa performance through the middle. He looked sharper than Ollie Watkins but it’s quite clear he doesn’t have all the tools for the job.

Substitutes

Ollie Watkins – 4.1

Watkins was rested, came on, did well to win a penalty with his best run of the season (but should have scored before he was fouled) and had a poor penalty saved.

Jadon Sancho – 5.1

He didn’t get loads of time off the bench to affect the game but Sancho is showing what he’s about and I think we’re going to see more and more of it.

Lucas Digne 5.0

We also saw some of Digne’s abilities in the attacking third, including a turn of pace he’s not shown so far this season and a terrific cross that might have helped Villa kill off the match.
