Aston Villa plotting a move for ‘most talked-about’ Swiss star in the January transfer window

0

Aston Villa are interested in a January move for Switzerland winger Rubén Vargas, according to reports in Spain.

Villa have already been linked with a number of targets in the days since the closure of the summer transfer window and Vargas, who only joined La Liga side Sevilla in January, is the latest name to emerge.

Vargas is reportedly the subject of several clubs in Europe but Villa are apparently among the more serious suitors because Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, has been working behind the scenes to firm up the club’s interest.

Monchi was the sporting director at Sevilla, working with Villa manager Unai Emery when the Andalusian club won the Europa League three times on the bounce between 2014 and 2016.

Vargas, whose Sevilla contract runs until the summer of 2029, has started the season positively. Fichajes reports that Villa are among the teams looking to capture his services.

“Rubén Vargas has become one of the most talked-about names on the European scene since his breakthrough at Sevilla,” reports the Spanish title. “The Swiss winger has established himself as one of the Andalusian side’s most disruptive players, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

The former Augsburg man can play on either flank or in the number 10 position, making him an ideal fit in theory for the positions where Villa have loan players in the squad and are lacking definition in the early part of the season.

Monchi ‘well aware of his potential’

Vargas started his career at Luzern before crossing the border to join Augsburg in Germany in 2019. After six years, 121 appearances and 42 goal contributions, he switched to Sevilla in the last January transfer window.

Sevilla don’t have European football to offer and the 27-year-old is seen as a possible acquisition for a number of clubs, and Villa’s previous connections could play a part.

“Monchi, who is well aware of Rubén Vargas’ potential, sees the Swiss as an ideal fit for Aston Villa’s style,” reports Fichajes.

“His ability to break through, his speed, and his goalscoring ability are a perfect fit for the demands of the English competition.

“Sevilla knows that losing Rubén Vargas in the middle of the winter transfer window would be a blow. In a season in which the club needs stability, parting with a key player would jeopardise their aspirations.”

Vargas has also caught the eye in international football, where Switzerland are perennial dark horses and often a nuisance for opponents in major international tournaments. The winger has featured in those regularly since the 2020 European Championship.

He has reached double figures for both goals and assists in his 54 caps, helping Switzerland to reach the quarter-finals of EURO 2020 by beating France. He made a telling contribution in a group stage win against Serbia in the subsequent World Cup and was instrumental in their victory over Italy at EURO 2024, scoring one goal and laying on the other in a 2-0 win.
