The 1990s were a formative decade for English football. The Premier League and Champions League began in 1992. Football grounds in the top division gradually became all-seater and the top flight’s commercial age took off with a vengeance.
Villa finished second twice and regularly qualified for Europe but missed their moment to join the elite under chairman Doug Ellis and his notoriously conservative leadership.
