‘They’re great!’ Loan star hails John McGinn and his Aston Villa teammates
Aston Villa have two players out on loan together at League One side Huddersfield Town and Josh Feeney has been on media duty this week.
Villa defender Feeney has previously been loaned out to Unai Emery’s Real Unión and Shrewsbury Town, where he suffered relegation to League Two last season.
New Huddersfield boss Lee Grant has overseen a remarkable overhaul of the Terriers’ squad and added Feeney to his defensive options early in the summer transfer window. The 20-year-old has made an impressive start to his season in West Yorkshire and was joined on deadline by another Villan.
Zépiqueno Redmond was Villa’s first signing of the summer and attracted loan interest from the second and third tiers. Despite securing a loan for Leicester City attacking midfielder Will Alves, Grant moved late for Redmond too.
Speaking to the media after transfer deadline day, Feeney was asked about his Villa teammates.
Josh Feeney on Villa
The young defender, who started Huddersfield’s last three League One matches, also spoke about Villa.
“The lads at Villa are great. I’ve been training with them since I was 16,” he said. “John McGinn is always talking to me, Ezri Konsa helps me in training as well… Matty Cash as well, they’re all great lads and they try to help me.
“We’ve got a couple of loan managers, including Tony Carss who was here as a player – I’ll give him a little shoutout! They keep an eye on games and give me tips on what I can do better in games.”
Feeney on his loan spell in Spain
Feeney played eight league matches on loan at Real Unión and told the local media at Accu Stadium that it wasn’t something he’d been expecting but the experience was good for his development, even if he did have to learn to drive on the other side of the road.
“It was quite surprising – one morning the [Villa] gaffer pulled me aside and the next thing I know I’m on a plane!” said the 20-year-old.
“It was an experience to say the least. I didn’t expect to be going out there at 18 – it was kind of put on me and not how I planned it.
“It was really good experience and I played under a couple of different managers. There weren’t many people who spoke English where we were and the style of football is different and you learn from everything you experience.”
