Aston Villa racing to sign La Liga goal machine before transfer deadline day: reports
Aston Villa have reportedly joined the chase to sign a prolific La Liga goalscorer before the end of the summer transfer window.
Villa have already brought in Evann Guessand but could still be in the market for a centre-forward with Guessand and Donyell Malen required in wider spots, and Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth is apparently on Monchi’s summer shopping list.
Sørloth certainly knows where the goal is. In three seasons in Spain, he’s plated for three different clubs and hit double figures for all of them.
The Norwegian international scored regularly for Real Sociedad in 2022/23, Villarreal in 2023/24 and Atlético Madrid in 2024/25, scoring 20 league goals and topping Europe’s five major leagues for goals per 90 minutes excluding penalties.
Not being a regular starter despite his excellent record in the Spanish capital has led to reports that Sørloth wants to move on and three Premier League clubs fancy a piece of the action.
Villa might be the least convincing option when compared to Champions League participants Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, but with Spurs getting a tune out of Richarlison and Newcastle yet to reap the rewards of Alexander Isak’s world-class temper tantrum, there’s no guarantee either will be in a position to make a firm approach.
Sørloth wouldn’t be an easy acquisition for Villa or anyone else. His contract runs until the summer of 2028 and his transfer fee would be prohibitive. Yet if the Rojiblancos are motivated sellers, there might be a chance to do a deal.
Unsuccessful spell in England
The 29-year-old has matured into an elite striker but struggled to find his feet in a previous stint in the Premier League having joined Crystal Palace as a youngster.
He made the move to London in the January transfer window in January 2018 and made just 16 appearances in the Premier League. His most direct impact came in cup football, where he scored once and assisted another goal in the League Cup. He also appeared in the FA Cup.
The Eagles loaned Sørloth to Belgian side Gent in 2019 and he also spent time in Turkey with Trabzonspor before making the permanent switch the RB Leipzig in Germany. He didn’t gain a foothold there either but has suited Spanish football to a tee since an initial loan with La Real in 2021.
Villa are yet to score a goal in the 2025/26 season, drawing 0-0 against Newcastle on opening day and losing 1-0 at Brentford on Saturday.
