Protest against UN building in Yerevan demanding release of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijani jails
ArmInfo. A rally is taking place in front of the UN building in Yerevan demanding the release of Armenian prisoners detained in Azerbaijan. The rally was organized by the ARF Dashnaktsutyun party.
The participants of the rally timed the event to coincide with the upcoming COP-29 summit in Baku. As former Artsakh parliament member Metaxia Hakobyan noted in her speech, this is already the second rally taking place before the upcoming event in the capital of Azerbaijan. The goal of the rally is to shed light on the situation in Baku's prisons and to urge the Armenian authorities to prioritize the return of prisoners. "The Prime Minister called on the prisoners to be patient for two months, but four years have passed since that day, and the issue still remains unresolved," Hakobyan said, adding that the authorities must keep the prisoners' relatives informed and take all necessary steps to ensure their return. In turn, Ara Nakhshkaryan, a representative of ARF party, in a conversation with journalists, cautioned against harboring any illusions about Azerbaijan.
According to him, Baku plans to keep detaining Armenian prisoners of war. "This is why we are here today to remind the world that Azerbaijan is not a reliable partner for a reconciliation agreement. I personally do not believe that Baku will release all of our compatriots, although I do not rule out that one or two civilians may be handed over to Armenia, to pull the wool over our eyes once again," the protester noted.
