New Banksy at the Royal Courts of Justice in London shows judge beating up protester.

A new artwork by Banksy, depicting a judge in a wig and gown beating an unarmed protester with a gavel, has appeared at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, only to be swiftly covered up.
The striking piece, located on an external wall of the Queen’s Building, part of the complex, shows a judge looming over a prostrate protester holding a blood-spattered placard.
The elusive artist confirmed responsibility for the work via an Instagram post on Monday morning, which featured two photos showing the graffiti before it was covered over by security guards.
Banksy, whose identity remains a source of constant speculation, captioned the pictures simply: "Royal Courts Of Justice. London."
The artwork is now hidden behind large sheets of black plastic and two metal barriers.
Security officials are guarding the site, which sits directly beneath a CCTV camera.

Banksy posted an image of his new work on Instagram (Banksy/PA)

The latest Banksy artwork comes after 890 people were arrested on Saturday during a protest against the government’s ban on Palestine Action.
His stencilled graffiti often comments on political issues and many of his pieces are critical of government policy, war and capitalism.
Last summer, Banksy made headlines with his animal-themed collection in the capital, which concluded with a gorilla appearing to lift up a shutter on the entrance to London Zoo.
Other notable works included piranhas swimming on a police sentry box in the City of London, turning the box into what looked like a giant fish tank, and a howling wolf on a satellite dish, which was taken off the roof of a shop in Peckham, south London, less than an hour after it was unveiled.

The animals collection was made up of nine works including a rhino seemingly mounting a silver Nissan Micra, two elephant silhouettes with their trunks stretched out towards each other and three monkeys that looked as though they were swinging on a bridge.

Court staff cover up Banksy image of judge beating a protester.
Artist’s latest work at Royal Courts of Justice in London is thought to refer to pro-Palestine demonstrations.

A painting by Banksy of a judge using a gavel to beat a helpless protester appeared on the walls of the Royal Courts of Justice in London before quickly being covered up by guards.
Banksy confirmed the artwork was his by posting a picture of it on Instagram on Monday morning.
Local workers said security guards were in position in front of the artwork, which is thought to be a reference to pro-Palestine protests.
One, Matteo, said he passed by at 8.30am on Monday when the guards were trying to stop people from taking pictures. More staff then arrived with supplies to cover it up.
“I think it’s disgusting that they would just cover it up,” added Matteo, who witnessed arrests at a pro-Palestine protest in London on Saturday. “They are clearly afraid of the response this will get.”
Police detained close to 900 people in the demonstration against the banning of the protest group Palestine Action.
A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, which has organised protests against the banning of Palestine Action, said: “When the law is used as a tool to crush civil liberties, it does not extinguish dissent – it strengthens it. As Banksy’s artwork shows, the state can try to strip away our civil liberties, but we are too many in number and our resolve to stand against injustice cannot be beaten.”
Banksy’s Instagram photo showed a lawyer and a cyclist passing the artwork, which is on the wall of the Queen’s Building at the court complex.
The protester was depicted lying on the ground holding a white placard with a red mark on it resembling blood.
A HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesperson said the artwork was being taken down as the court was a listed building and they were “obliged to maintain its original character”.
The Queen’s Building was completed in 1964 and is registered as a Grade II-listed building, according to the National Heritage List for England, which provides legal protection for buildings of particular architectural or historical interest.
Banksy, whose identity is not known, has a reputation for political works and has painted on the separation wall that Israel erected along the boundary of the occupied West Bank.
In May, he posted a picture of a work in Marseille – a stencilled lighthouse and the words: “I want to be what you saw in me.”

Greedy grizzlies are being celebrated as Fat Bear Week announces this year's most impressive beasts preparing to enter hibernation.
The much-loved contest pits the brown bears of Alaska's Katmai National Park & Preserve against each other to well they bulk up for winter hibernation.
The US National Park Service (NPS) launched this season's competition on September 5 by highlighting some previous year's winners.
The winner of Fat Bear Week 2024 was Grazer, a mother bear who successfully defended her title for the second consecutive year.
She received over 71,000 votes, more than double the votes of her closest rival, a male bear named Chunk.
NPS said: 'Big, bold, and bear-y round: a fat bear champ will soon be crowned!
'This is how legends are made. Fat Bear Week, the ultimate bracket competition where the public votes for the bear that achieves peak spherical status, is just around the corner!
They confirmed the event will take place from September 23 to September 30, with a 'chubby cubby appetizer', Fat Bear Junior, kicking off on September 18 to September 19.

The winner of Fat Bear Week 2024 was Grazer, a mother bear who successfully defended her title for the second consecutive year.

In 2023, Bear 747 claimed the title of the fattest bear.

Bear 480 Otis won the contest in 2021.

NPS added: 'From tubby titans to gargantuan gluttons, get ready to cheer for the heftiest bears in Katmai National Park & Preserve's Brooks River!'
Fat Bear Week has been running since 2014, making 2025 its 11th year of celebrating the fattening efforts of brown bears in Katmai National Park.
NPS said this year's bear bios would be revealed soon.
In 2018, Bear 409 Beadnose won the contest, followed by Bear 435 Holly in 2019.
The following year, Bear 747 won and would go on to win again in 2022 after its crown was stolen by Bear 480 Otis in 2021.
In 2023 and 2024, Bear 128 Grazer claimed the winning title and it is yet to be seen which bear is announced winner in this year's competition.
It comes after a fight between two Fat Bear Week contestants halted the competition after one bear killed another in a gruesome, televised brawl, last year.
An adult male and female were caught on the competitions' livestream fighting in the mouth of the Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

In 2020 Bear 747 won and would go on to win again in 2022.

The winner of Fat Bear Week 2019 was Bear 435 Holly.

In 2018, Bear 409 Beadnose won Fat Bear Week.

Resident naturalist for explore.org, Mike Fitz, gave commentary on the deadly altercation between the two bears.
Fitz said: 'Watching bears attack other bears is often difficult to see, especially if a bear kills another bear so this is a difficult situation to witness.'
The commentators had little idea what started the fight, but said they didn't believe it was over food resources but rather a 'dominance' fight.
Katmai Park Ranger Sarah Bruce said: 'He's a predator toward this female bear... We don't know why they're fighting... [These are] two bears very clearly not playing around.'
The two bears were seen on the livestream footage fighting in the river. Adult male number 469 and adult female number 402 battled for more than 20 minutes, before 402 was killed by 469.
