Armenian government to rechannel agricultural subsidies into leasing programs
YEREVAN, February 2. /ARKA/. The Armenian government will rechannel agricultural subsidies into leasing programs, agriculture minister Ignaty Arakelyan said to reporters today. According to him, subsidies provided by the government to farmers for purchase of diesel fuel and fertilizers are not effective, ‘because this money does not provide real assistance to villagers.’
"In all likelihood, the government will no longer subsidize the purchase of diesel fuel and fertilizers by farmers. We expect their prices to fall. In our opinion, it is more expedient to channel this money into machinery leasing programs,’ Arakelyan said.
The minister said that the government is working out leasing programs, qualification requirements. He said the market is open to any company that is able to present its machinery to local farmers. He said companies from Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and Belarus have already shown interest in this program.
‘We will publicize our prices, and everyone will be able to take advantage of leasing, including selection of the machinery-manufacturing country,’ Arakelyan said.
According to him, the lack of modern agricultural machinery is one of the major reasons why Armenian agriculture is not effective. -0-
