YEREVAN, February 1. /ARKA/. Construction of the Armenian Cancer Treatment Center will be completed in 2-2.5 years, a spokesman for the project implementation office of the ministry of health, David Melik-Nubaryan, said today.

The center will consist of a cyclotron radionuclide accelerator that will be used for producing isotopes as part of the project worked out by Yerevan Institute of Physics, for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and the radiotherapy center.

According to the health ministry, 30,000 people suffer from cancer and their number grows by 3 percent every year and about 600 Armenians with cancer are being treated abroad every year, but their real number is believed to be much higher.  David Melik-Nubaryan said also that a tender will be announced soon to choose a company to build the Center.

He said the health ministry plans also to upgrade the oncology ward of a new medical center in Armenia’s third largest town of Vanadzor. According to him, Vanadzor is one of the Armenian cities with the highest level of cancer-caused morbidity and mortality. He also noted that the government is making serious efforts to make cancer treatment more affordable for the population of Armenia.

He said in 2011 the government adopted a strategy in for treatment of non-communicable diseases. The main focus of this strategy was the development of the existing infrastructure, one of which is the Hematology Center, which was commissioned in November last year.

According to him, the Hematology Center was upgraded as part of a World Bank-financed program. "I can confidently say that today the Hematology Center fully complies with the highest European standards", said David Melik-Nubaryan. -0-
