Police in Turkey arrested Ahmet Şık, a prominent journalist, in Istanbul on Thursday, over tweets and articles.

State-run Anadolu Agency said his publications with daily Cumhuriyet was of the reasons for his detention as part of an ongoing investigation. The journalist is accused of making "terror propaganda".

The tweets concerned are related to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Anadolu explained.

Şık later tweeted he was being detained and "taken to the prosecutor's office regarding a tweet."

Earlier in the 2010s, he spent more than a year behind bars with a colleague before the publication of a book exposing the infiltration of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gülen into the police and the judiciary. Gülen, blamed by Ankara for the July 15 botched coup attempt, was still an ally to Turkish authorities at the time.
