Some 18 hectares of new forests planted in six months
YEREVAN, August 23. /ARKA/. In the first six months of 2016 the area of forests in Armenia increased by 18 hectares, Martun Matevosyan, director of ArmForest state non-commercial organization, told a news conference today. The trees were planted by volunteers during subbotniks, days of unpaid labor, usually on Saturday.
According to him, more young trees will be planted in autumn on a 10 hectare area along the coast of Lake Sevan with the assistance of the Foundation for Restoration and Development of Forests. He noted that new trees will be planted also in Gugark and Lalvar regions.
Matevosyan also added that in the first half of 2016 15 cases of fire had been recorded in areas supervised by ArmForest.
"The fires affected 16 hectares of land, of which 9.74 hectares were woodland. No trees were damaged as a result, only the grass was burnt," he said. --0----
