Johannesburg - A few people affiliated to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have taken their demand for wage increases to the ANC's headquarters in Johannesburg after talks between the union and Telkom collapsed.

The CWU members picketed outside Luthuli House. They carried placards, including a sign saying that the “CWU wants a better wage”, and sang struggle songs.

The union is demanding an 11% salary increase across the board, six months paid maternity leave and a three-year moratorium on retrenchments.

CWU general secretary Aubrey Tshabalala told Independent Media on Tuesday that he was disappointed that talks between the two had collapsed with no agreement.

The next step would be further engagement under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

The parties have been in a protracted dispute over a wage hike and some members have downed tools.

Last week Monday, Telkom secured an urgent interim court order interdicting and restraining the union and its members from a number of illegal activities associated with the union’s current strike.
