Cape Town - It is just a week to go before the kick-off to the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season which sees 14 of the 16 clubs in action on Tuesday and Wednesday night next week, August 23 and 24.

All fixtures on the opening night (Tuesday) and Wednesday will start at 7.30pm. Tuesday will see four fixtures played while Wednesday night will have three matches.

Day one of the 2016/17 season will see last season's Absa Premiership runners-up, Bidvest Wits host Kaizer Chiefs at the Bidvest Stadium.

While 15 of the 16 league clubs have been playing friendly games over the past three months, reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been keeping busy via their progression in Africa. The Brazilians are in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League and will seemingly be best prepared to tackle the season full on.

Pitso Mosimane's men, however, will not be in action when the first round of games are played next week due to their continental commitments - they have a date in Nigeria with Enyimba on Tuesday to conclude the formality of group matches, which they already have reached, before the semi-finals next month.

But there will be plenty of other action to look forward to, with four matches scheduled for the opening day of action next Tuesday, including a first glimpse of promoted Baroka FC and the PSL's newest franchise, Cape Town City.

'Bakgaga' will be at home to Ajax Cape Town at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, while City, previously known as Mpumalanga Black Aces, will welcome Polokwane City to the Cape Town Stadium.

Also on Tuesday, two teams expected to be Sundowns' biggest title threats - Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs - come up against each other at the Bidvest Stadium.

The final match on the first night of action will see Chippa United take on Free State Stars at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

There are three more matches on Wednesday with Orlando Pirates playing Lamontville Golden Arrows in Soweto, Platinum Stars up against SuperSport United at Royal Bafokeng Stadium and Bloemfontein Celtic to take on Maritzburg United at Dr Molemela Stadium. - African News Agency (ANA)
