YEREVAN, August 16. /ARKA/. Over 110 Armenian communities have been included in the second stage of the World Bank-funded Community Agricultural Resource Management and Competitiveness (CARMAC 2) project, Gagik Khachatryan, head of project implementation office at the ministry of agriculture, said today.

Speaking to journalists, he said the first five-year stage of the project was implemented by the Armenian government since 2011. It involved 81 communities in Shirak, Aragatsotn, Lori, Tavush, Gegharkunik and Syunik provinces. The financing of the first stage amounted to $16 million.

"The outcome of the first stage has exceeded our expectations. The project did not stipulate additional funding, which is why we have included in the project 26 more communities thanks to savings. As part of the project a 200 meters long water pipeline was built for watering farm animals and more than 120 hectares of grazing land were made suitable for use,” he said.

He said the second stage of the project launched last year is financed by a World Bank $32 million loan. According to Khachatryan, the project will  run until 2020.

"Apart from economic, the project also has environmental advantages. Before it started land areas adjacent to the territory of the villages were actually degraded," said Khachatryan.

The project is expected to improve productivity and sustainability of pasture and livestock systems in targeted communities. It will also help strengthen links between producers and processors, promote food safety, and support processing and marketing. -0-
