Rio de Janeiro - Wayde van Niekerk prepared for the greatest night of his life by watching the Liverpool match, in the room he shares with fellow sprint star Akani Simbine.

"We just chilled in the room, and watched TV, then the Arsenal game against Liverpool."

Van Niekerk is an obsessed Liverpool fan, and obviously took great heart from their pulsating 4-3 win over Arsenal.

"We had spoken about the record a bit in Jamaica," Simbine admitted.

"I always knew he had it in him to be great, and that he could break the world record.

"It's pretty cool to know that my friend is an Olympic champion, and a world record holder.

I just know that he can keep that winning streak on, and just be the greatest of all!"

Simbine added that given Van Niekerk's very relaxed demeanour, it will just be another night in with his roommate.

"I'm sure nothing will change, knowing my friend."

Simbine himself had enjoyed a stellar night, qualifying for a high-class 100m final, which saw him end fifth, as Usain Bolt won a third straight Olympic title.

On any other night, it could have been the greatest hour in roommate history.
