Cape Town - The Hawks have arrested two security guards for allegedly leaking information which led to a string of cash-in-transit heists across Cape Town.

The two G4S security guards were nabbed on Friday following a recent cash-in-transit heist in Mitchells Plain.

Western Cape Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha said they arrested the guards shortly after they reported for duty on Friday morning.

Ramovha said the heist had taken place late last month at the Mitchells Plain Town Centre.

“A cash van was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, crew and driver were reportedly accosted by an unknown number of suspects and robbed of firearms as well as bags containing cash before suspects fled the scene,” he said.

According to Ramovha there were no injuries in the heist and no shots were fired.

The two men, aged 37 and 38, are expected to appear at the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges relating to armed robbery.

Ramovha said he was concerned about the information leaked by the guards and that the majority of cash-in-transit heists in the city involved G4S guards.

“It is amazing that 99 percent of the heists involve G4S security,” he said.

No further detail on the men has been made available at this stage.

G4S security said they were unable to comment at this stage as the suspects had not yet appeared in court.
