A gutted South African Sevens side only has a few hours to regroup, after losibg their 2016 Olympic Games semi-final to Great Britain 7-5 on Thursday.

The result means that Neil Powell's side will not get a shot at a gold medal, but now face Japan in the playoff for a bronze medal.

Powell, visibly disappointed, admitted that small mistakes had cost his side the shot at gold.

"We definitely had a few opportunities in the first half. You have to take those, especially playing with the wind, because you know that it's going to be tough playing into it, Powell bemoaned.

He now has the tough task of lifting his players again, ahead of a match against a side that has stolen hearts in Rio.

"We will have to get back up, because Japan are a very good side. They've beaten New Zealand and they've played really well. We still have a chance of getting on the podium," he pointed out. - Independent Media
