Bulgaria’s President Sends Air Force Chief into Retirement

Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev has issued a decree for the retirement of Air Force Commander Maj Gen Rumen Radev from military service.

General Radev has emerged as a possible joint nomination for president of main opposition Socialists and left-wing ABV party.

The decree of the Supreme Commander of the Bulgarian Armed Forces dated August 10 was sent to the Council of Minister’s office to be signed by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, the President’s office announced on Wednesday.

Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev will now have to issue an order to complete the procedure of sending General Radev into retirement.

No major political party has announced a candidate to run in the presidential elections yet. Bulgaria will vote for President on November 6.
