Durban - Thousands of households in Durban will have their water restricted from Thursday, as the ongoing drought continues to threaten the water supply in the province.

Almost 100 areas in central and South Durban would experience restrictions between 9am and 4pm. The measure was necessary to avoid taps running completely dry read a statement from the eThekwini Municipality on Wednesday evening.

Water restrictors were being installed to reduce water pressure and flow to prolong the available water and stabilise storage in the Wiggins supply system, otherwise taps would soon run completely dry.

Some residents living mainly in higher lying areas, had been experiencing interruptions of their water supply due to the frequent draining and filling of the water supply system. This had also caused repeated bursts to the water mains. “These interventions will help to stabilize the water supply system and control the outflow from the reservoirs. The Municipality’s intention is to provide customers with an uninterrupted supply once we have reached the desired water savings of 5%,” read the statement.
