Four Armenian athletes to fight today for Olympic medals in Rio
YEREVAN, August 10. /ARCH/. Four Armenian athletes- two boxers and two weightlifters - will be fighting later today for the medals of the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the National Olympic Committee of Armenia (NOCA) said today.
The boxers Aram Avagyan and Hovhannes Bachkov will face Arashi Morisaki of Japan and Luis Martin Arkona of Venezuela respectively.
Then weightlifter Nazik Avdalyan (she was world champion in 2009 and Europe’s champion in 2008 and 2016) and weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan, the acting Europe’s champion will enter the fight.
Thirty-three Armenian athletes have qualified for the 31st Games, the highest number of athletes ever sent by Armenia to Olympic Games.
Overall, Armenian athletes (after its became independent from former Soviet Union) have won 12 Olympic medals, including one gold and two silver medals. The gold medal was won by wrestler Armen Nazaryan in 1996 Games in Atlanta, USA.
The first ethnic Armenian athlete winning Olympic gold was gymnast Hrant Shahinyan as a member of the USSR team in 1952 in Helsinki. There Shahinyan won two gold and two silver medals.
Other ethnic Armenian winners of the Olympic Games are gymnasts Albert Azaryan and Eduard Azaryan, pentathlete Igor Novikov, boxer Vladimir Yengibaryan, Faina Melnik (discus), weightlifters Yuri Vardanyan, Oxen Mirzoyan, Yisrael Militosyan and wrestlers Levon Julfalakyan and Mnatsakan Iskandaryan .-- 0--
