90% of election votes have been counted
Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says 83.3 percent of votes for the local government election have been verified.
|||Pretoria - The IEC had counted 90 percent of the votes for the local government election by Thursday evening.
Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo told reporters in Pretoria that “83.3 percent of votes have been counted and verified. Ten thousand voting sheets still need to tailed”.
Mamabolo said results for Nelson Mandela Bay metro would be in later on Thursday night.
“(The) major delays in the metros is due to population densities and not to due to recounting.”
On ballots being found outside the IEC centre in Port Elizabeth, the commission said there was no need to worry as they had all been counted.
“We want every political party to be assured that the process is open and transparent,” he said.
The IEC said that it hoped to have dealt with all objections by Saturday.
