Mbeki loses contest in Butterworth
The ANC's Zolani Siyo won 60.48% of the votes in Butterworth, saying that the DA’s Madoda Mbeki gave him ‘no competition’.
|||Butterworth - ANC councillor candidate Zolani Siyo, who contested Butterworth-based Mnquma Local Municipality’s ward 1 against the DA’s Madoda Mbeki, says the former statesman’s brother gave him “no competition”.
Madoda Mbeki made the news recently when he claimed that “AmaZizi (Mbeki) clan are no longer in one kraal with the ANC”. This claim was later disputed by former President Thabo Mbeki’s spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga, who said the former president was an ANC member in good standing.
In the ward, Siyo won 60.48% of the votes while Mbeki got only 11.23%. Mbeki was beaten to third place by the UDM, which won 12.1% of the vote. The ward consists of the Butterworth CBD.
“He (Mbeki) was not even a threat to us. We knew that not even his surname would compel voters to vote for him. The people of this area know what ANC has done for them. There was no competition between me and him.”
Attempts to get comment from Madoda Mbeki were not successful.
