Chief of Armenian police dismisses head of Nor Nork police department

YEREVAN, August 4. /ARKA/.  Chief of Armenian Police Vladimir Gasparyan has dismissed today Armen Vatyan, who was head of the police department of Nor Nork district in Yerevan, Tert.am reported citing a spokesman for police.

"Armen Vatyan was dismissed because of  improper fulfillment of his official duties, and his failure to take sufficient  and preventive measures, as a result of which citizens,  police officers and journalists were injured in a clash between citizens and riot police," tert.am said.

Four police officers were said to have been injured late on July 19 when trying to stop a group of angry people from approaching a police station in Yerevan that was seized earlier  by a group of armed men. The people gathered in a show of support for the gunmen.

The armed group  surrendered eventually July 31 after two weeks of standoff in Yerevan as they barricaded themselves inside a police compound.

"The security forces' anti-terrorist operation has ended and led to the members of the armed group laying down their weapons and surrendering to the authorities," the national security services said in a statement.
"Twenty terrorists were arrested."

The gunmen had held four police officers hostage for a week before releasing them unharmed. They later seized four members of an ambulance crew, but the last two were allowed to leave on July 30.

The gunmen killed one officer and wounded several others in their initial attack. Police accused the  gunmen of killing a second officer on July 30  as he sat in a vehicle away from the compound. -0-
