Pretoria - The ANC has performed well in Tshwane townships that were plagued by violence in the run-up to Wednesday's municipal elections.

The party walked away with victory in the majority of township wards despite spirited electioneering campaigns by the DA and EFF.

In Atteridgeville, the ANC clinched eight of the wards. It, however, lost Ward 3 in Pretoria West to the DA.

Hammanskraal, one of the biggest constituencies in Tshwane, also went the way of the ANC in all nine wards. The ANC lost Ward 4 to the DA, but bagged all the 17 wards in Soshanguve .

In Mabopane, Garankuwa and Winterveld the ANC was dominant in all 10 wards.

Another impressive performance was also recorded in Mamelodi, where the ANC dominated in all 14 wards.

Townships have traditionally been the ANC's strongholds, despite being rocked by waves of violence and discontent in the run-up to elections.

Disgruntled communities took to the street after the ANC decided to install former public works minister Thoko Didiza as its Tshwane mayoral candidate.

The areas were also the scenes of violent protests when the ANC was nominating its candidates.

The counting continues.
