DA leader Mmusi Maimane has attacked President Jacob Zuma’s lifestyle accusing him of seeing South Africans as “blessers”.

President Jacob Zuma thinks South Africans are “blessers” funding his lifestyle, claimed DA leader Mmusi Maimane during election campaigning in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Saturday.

A blesser is an older man who showers a younger woman with cash and gifts in return for sex.

“He (Zuma) thinks South Africans are blessers. He thinks we are blessing him. He bought his wives, for R9 million, all nice cars,” said Maimane.

“He doesn't stop there. He has decided to go buy himself a new jet for R4 billion. We want to send one message to Jacob Zuma: we want jobs, not jets. We are not your blessers.”

Maimane also attacked Western Cape ANC leader Marius Fransman, calling him a “tsotsi” (gangster) who “will be in tears” after the August 3 municipal election.

Maimane said the DA wanted to win a two-thirds majority in Cape Town, making it a “burial society to bury the ANC”.

The party already rules the city and Western Cape but wants to win more wards.

The DA said it would this week sign up at least 500 defectors from the ANC.

Maimane’s other opponent for August 3 vote is EFF leader Julius Malema, whom he dismissed as “violent”.

“He said he would kill for Jacob Zuma. Now he wants to kill Jacob Zuma. How do we trust such a person?” asked Maimane.

The rally was meant to be a “youth blitz to engage with and celebrate young people during this youth month”, according to a DA statement.

“Maimane will outline the DA’s plan to empower young South Africans through quality education and job creation, ensuring that all young South Africans live in a country alive with opportunity,” said the DA ahead of the event.

Hannie Morgan from Hermanus said that he came to Khayelitsha by bus. Members were all given DA T-shirts and after the rally they received a meal.

Morgan said members from elsewhere were bussed in because “we wanted to show that we are growing”.

“We are honest and we want to work for the people,” she added.

Morgan added that she knew of DA members from Caledon, Hermanus, Gansbaai, Grabouw and Kleinmond who were also bussed to Khayelitsha.

Other members said they came from Atlantis, Mitchells Plain and other parts of the city.

While Maimane made his way with DA members through the township's streets, some onlookers shouted: “They are lying.”

Others who were asked to join the DA rally refused and just watched them pass by.

A number of Western Cape DA leaders attended the rally.
