Drugs worth R9 million seized at OR Tambo

Customs officials seized drugs worth over R9 million rand in two separate busts at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Cape Town – South African customs officials seized drugs worth over R9 million rand in two separate busts at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) said in a statement on Thursday.

The officials discovered three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, more commonly known by its street name tik, in luggage which arrived from Ethiopia.

“A scan of the luggage, from Addis Ababa, revealed suspicious-looking images and on further inspection Crystal Methamphetamine with a street value of R9 million was found inside the bag, concealed in packages covered in brown tape,” Sars said.

Customs officials also inspected a trophy stand destined for the UK after a tip-off was received about concealed drugs.

“Two detector dogs reacted positively to the item whereupon the stand was dismantled. Compressed cannabis weighing 19kg to the value of R26 600 was found inside.”

The customs officials handed the drugs over to the South African Police Service for further investigations.
