|||Cape Town - A tik addict is on the run after he allegedly stabbed his own father in the head with a knife.
Jamiel Hansen, 44, survived the attack and was rushed to hospital with the blade still lodged in his skull.
However, he was declared brain dead and passed away a day later.
Relatives turned off his life support on Saturday and he was laid to rest according to Muslim tradition on Sunday.
Police say the 25-year-old suspect went on the run after the attack and is yet to be arrested.
The incident happened inside Jamiel’s house in Buckingham Street, Portlands, on Friday morning.
His distraught brother, Denver Hansen, 40, tells the Daily Voice he was in the kitchen where the two argued.
“I was with my back towards my brother when it happened, I don’t know what happened or why they were arguing,” he explains.
“When I turned around I saw the blade inside Jamiel’s head. He could still walk and was still conscious. He managed to walk to the couch in the kitchen.
“We put the machines off on Saturday because he was already in a vegetative state. He was brain dead.”
Denver admits his nephew, the alleged killer, is a drug addict who was also stabbed in the head a few years ago.
“He must have snapped and done it [killed Jamiel] in the heat of the moment.”
“He was also under the doctors four or five years ago because he was also stabbed in the head during a gang thing.”
Denver says his nephew has been a recovering drug addict and explains the family home was a “safe haven” for homeless drug addicts.
He adds: “My parents own this house, they opened their doors for recovering addicts who were thrown out of their own homes or didn’t have a place to stay. We are very sad by what has happened.”
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says a case of murder is under investigation.
“No one has been arrested at this stage. We are looking for a suspect,” she says.
