Armenia’s apricot crop estimated to be between 45,000 and 55,000 tons this year

YEREVAN, April 25. /ARKA/. Armenia’s apricot crop is estimated to be between 45,000 and 55,000 tons this year, Armenia's agriculture ministry said after gauging the damage inflicted by March frost to apricot trees.

The press office said Monday that the figure still might differ from the projected volume because of some natural fall of apricots that is seen in mid-May, as a rule.

”There is also another interesting factor, which might have a favorable impact on results – in case of insufficient loading with fruits, fruits on trees are bigger and their quality is higher,” the press release says. «And this significantly mitigates losses.»

According to the agriculture ministry, Artarat and Armavir were stricken by the frost harder than other provinces.

Apricot farms in Armavir and Echmiadzin and some communities in Baghramyan lost 50 to 80 percent of their harvests, and some communities even more.

More accurate figures will be presented in the middle of May.

According to official reports released in late July 2015, the then apricot crop totaled about 103,000 tons, which was 14,000 tons more than the result of the previous year. ---0----
