Armenian parliament ratifies protocol on interaction with CIS countries' border agencies

YEREVAN, April 25. /ARKA/. Armenia's National Assembly ratified Monday a protocol to lay a legal ground for Armenia's interaction with CIS member countries' border agencies in providing assistance in emergency situations on outside borders.

The agreement was signed on October 5, 2007 in Dushanbe and since then has been ratified by Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Russia.

Arzuman Harutyunyan, deputy chief of Armenia's national security service, said that there was no need until now to put the agreement in practice, though some financial assistance was provided to Tajikistan for strengthening its borders.

»The cooperation doesn't imply financial assistance or military actions, but it implies cooperation among border services in crises mainly at the level of consultations of the coordinating council of the border-defending institutions,» he said.

In particular, if border areas become crowded as a result of some terrorist or military actions, border defenders make an appropriate decision on the situation after mutual consultations.

Harutyunyan said that Armenia has not appealed to its fellow members of the agreement for assistance so far. --0---
