The Norwegian yesterday confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the season, and it is believed that Manchester United legend Giggs, currently Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Old Trafford, is aware of Celtic’s interest.
However, Sportsmail understands the 42-year-old has reservations about a move north of the border, even though he sees his long-term future as a manager and is said to be keen on taking a top job.
News of Deila’s departure came three days after a Scottish Cup semi-final defeat by Old Firm rivals Rangers at Hampden.
‘There have been some disappointments and times when we have not achieved what we hoped for,’ he said. ‘I’m realistic and honest enough to admit that.’
The return of Rangers to the Scottish top flight should mean there is a more competitive league next season, but Celtic are likely to dominate again.
Giggs wants clarification on his long-term role at United before making a decision on his future. He has been earmarked to become manager one day, and possibly as Van Gaal’s successor, and United remain keen on keeping him at the club in the long term.
But his path to the job is now unclear, with Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino both touted as candidates to take over from Van Gaal.
Neil Lennon could also be considered for a return to Parkhead after leaving Bolton in March, and David Moyes, also a former Celtic player, is another who is in the reckoning.
Northern Irishman Lennon, who won 16 trophies as a player and manager with Celtic, is keen on a return.
‘I would definitely be interested,’ he said. ‘I was associated with the club for 15 years, I missed it when I left as a player and there are aspects that you miss even now at 44 years of age.’ – Daily Mail
