King William’s Town – A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a three-year-old child, Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said Kei Bridge police arrested the man in the early hours of Thursday morning, April 21, in Manqulo Village, Butterworth.

“The allegation is that the victim was raped by the suspect on Wednesday 20 April 2016 at about 21:00 at Maqwathini Location, Manqulo Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth. The 55-year-old grandmother found her three-year-old granddaughter shivering and crying as she was from another hut. She also found the suspect inside the same hut where the victim was,” Manatha said.

The suspect ran off when he was confronted by the grandmother, but was later arrested.

Manatha said the child told her grandmother she was raped in a “dark forest” not far from their home.

The suspect will be charged with rape and will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
