Greece Bears the Brunt of Migrant Arrivals by Sea

Almost 90% of all migrants who have entered Europe by sea this year have arrived in Greece, the latest estimates of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) showed on Friday.

As of April 6, arrivals in Greece by sea for 2016 totalled 152,461, according to IOM. Another 914 migrants and refugees have arrived by land.

This compares with an estimated total of 172,458 migrants and refugees who have entered Europe by sea into Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain through April 6.

Arrivals to Greece over the seven days to  April 6 1,758 men, women and children – approximately the daily average over the previous three months and a significant drop from two weeks ago, which saw 5,293 arrivals by sea.

The Greek Coast Guard has reported that not a single migrant or refugee arrived by sea in Greece on April 5 – for the first time since last year, according to IOM.
