Armenian President: "Russia is our ally, not patron”

“I’ve never said that Russia is our patron, or that any country ever was or could be our patron. Russia never played for Armenia the role that Turkey plays for Azerbaijan,” Armenian President said in an interview to Deutsche Welle.

“Russia is our strategic partner, we have a strategic agreement with Russia. However, we’ve always stated openly that we are against Russia’s weapons supply to Azerbaijan,” observed the President.

Serzh Sargsyan noticed that the ceasefire violation in NKR wasn’t unexpected.

“Azerbaijan suffered heavy losses. Moreover, Russian Chief of General Staff called his Armenian colleague and informed that Azerbaijan is ready to meet in Moscow with Armenian representatives regarding this matter. Of course, there was international community’s support as well,” said Armenian President.

Serzh Sargsyan remarked that Armenian side did everything to avoid bloodshed.

“We alerted appropriate instances and structures about what was going to happen, how the events could turn. We suggested to create investigation mechanism for incidents along the Line of Contact to determine clearly who initiates conflicts,” noted Armenian President.
